What Ashwagandha Actually Is

Ashwagandha is a nightshade. The same botanical family as the tomato, the potato, the aubergine and deadly nightshade. Before it was a word on a supplement label, it was a scrubby grey-green shrub growing in dry ground across India, the Middle East and parts of Africa.

That is worth starting with, because most writing about ashwagandha skips the plant entirely and goes straight to the claims. The plant is more honest than the claims. It is where the real story is.

The Plant Itself

The botanical name is Withania somnifera. It belongs to the Solanaceae, the nightshade family. It is a small shrub, anywhere from thirty centimetres to three metres, with dull green oval leaves and a covering of fine white hairs on the branches. The flowers are small and a greenish yellow, easy to miss. They ripen into little berries that turn from green to a red orange, held in a papery husk.

The part that matters is underground. The long, straight roots are dug up, dried and ground to a pale powder. That powder, and the extracts made from it, is what the trade calls ashwagandha. Some modern products also use the leaf, and this turns out to matter more than it sounds.

It grows in hard, arid places. India and Nepal, Pakistan, Iran, and down through Africa. A plant of dry soil and heat, not of comfort.

What the Name Is Telling You

The word is Sanskrit. Ashva, meaning horse. Gandha, meaning smell. The fresh root has a distinct animal odour, and that is the plain reading: the plant that smells of horse.

There is a second reading that the tradition preferred. To take ashwagandha was said to give a person the strength and vigour of a stallion. Both meanings have followed the plant for centuries, and it is hard to say where the description ends and the marketing begins. Even three thousand years ago, the story sold alongside the root.

The Latin half of the botanical name carries its own claim. Somnifera means sleep bringing. And the plant collected a string of English common names too, Indian ginseng and winter cherry among them. Indian ginseng is a borrowed reputation rather than a botanical fact, since the plant is no relation to true ginseng at all.

A plant accumulates names the way a river accumulates silt. Each one records what somebody, at some point, wanted it to do.

Three Thousand Years of Use

Ashwagandha is one of the oldest documented herbs in Ayurveda, the traditional medicine of the Indian subcontinent. It appears in the foundational texts, the Charaka Samhita and the Susruta Samhita, written down more than two thousand years ago and drawing on older oral practice still.

In those texts it is classed as a Rasayana, a category of tonics believed to promote strength, vitality and longevity. The Sanskrit descriptions attached to it are specific and immodest. Balya, giver of strength. Vajikari, promoter of vigour. The root was prescribed for a remarkable range of complaints across the centuries, from wasting and weakness to sleeplessness and anxiety.

The length of that history is genuinely part of the appeal, and it should be treated with a little care. A plant said to be good for almost everything is, by that very breadth, a plant that has rarely been tested for anything in particular. Traditional use tells you what people valued. It does not tell you what works. The two questions are separate, and modern research exists precisely because they are.

The Chemistry That Does the Work

A plant is a bag of chemistry. When ashwagandha does anything measurable, it is these compounds doing it, not the idea of the herb.

The signature molecules are the withanolides, a family of naturally occurring steroidal lactones found across the plant. Withaferin A and withanolide A are the two most studied. Alongside them sit the withanosides, along with alkaloids, flavonoids and sterols. The withanolide content is the number that scientists track, because it is the closest thing the plant has to an active dose.

Here is the detail that most labels leave out. The chemistry of the root and the chemistry of the leaf are not the same. Leaf material tends to be richer in withaferin A, and root and leaf preparations are not interchangeable. Nor are two root extracts, if they were made by different methods to different concentrations. This is why the serious research reports a withanolide percentage rather than simply a weight of powder. A gram of one preparation is not a gram of another.

The Word Adaptogen

Somewhere in almost every description of this plant, the word adaptogen appears. It is worth knowing where it came from, because it is doing more work in marketing than it can bear in science.

The term was coined in 1947 by a Soviet toxicologist, Nikolai Lazarev, and developed through the following decades by researchers including Israel Brekhman. It was meant to describe a substance that raises the body's non-specific resistance to stress, returning it towards balance, without being toxic or throwing normal function off in the process. A tidy idea.

The trouble is that it has never been pinned down. The definition is loose, the criteria are hard to test, and regulators have declined to treat it as meaningful. The concept is not accepted in mainstream pharmacology, and adaptogen is not an authorised health claim in either the European Union or the United States. A supplement may print the word. It may not lean on it to promise a result.

So the honest position is that adaptogen is a useful shorthand for a category of traditional tonic herbs, and nothing more precise than that. When it is used as if it named a proven mechanism, it is being used to imply something the evidence has not established.

What the Modern Evidence Actually Covers

Strip away the tradition and the terminology, and a narrower picture remains. Most of the credible human research on ashwagandha clusters around stress, and specifically around cortisol, the hormone the body raises under sustained pressure. That is the area with the most randomised trials behind it, and it is a more complicated story than the headlines suggest, with real findings and real disagreements between studies. It has its own article on this journal, and that is the right place to weigh it.

The rest of the traditional repertoire, the strength and the longevity and the long list of ailments, is far thinner on modern evidence. Some of it has been studied a little. Most of it has not been studied properly at all.

  • It is a nightshade. Withania somnifera, family Solanaceae, a small shrub of dry ground across India, the Middle East and Africa.
  • The root is the traditional part. Dried and ground to a powder. Some modern products also use the leaf, and the two differ chemically.
  • The name means the smell of horse. From the Sanskrit ashva and gandha, with a secondary sense of a horse's strength. Somnifera is Latin for sleep bringing.
  • It is old. A Rasayana tonic in Ayurveda for around three thousand years, named in the Charaka and Susruta Samhitas.
  • The active compounds are withanolides. Withanolide content, not powder weight, is the number that matters.
  • Adaptogen is a loose word. Coined in 1947, never scientifically settled, and not an authorised claim in the UK, EU or US.

Safety, and the UK Review Underway

An honest explainer does not stop at what a plant is. It says plainly who should be careful with it.

In trials, ashwagandha is generally well tolerated over a few months, with side effects that are usually mild, such as stomach upset, loose stools, nausea and drowsiness. Evidence over longer periods is lacking. There are also documented case reports of more serious harm, including acute liver injury, and some research points to effects on thyroid function. It may interact with medication for the thyroid, for diabetes, for blood pressure, and with sedatives and immunosuppressants.

Several countries have acted on these concerns. Denmark restricted its use in food supplements. France, through its food safety agency ANSES, advised against use in certain groups including pregnant and breastfeeding women and people with endocrine disorders.

In the United Kingdom, the Food Standards Agency has referred ashwagandha to the Committee on Toxicity for a formal safety assessment. The FSA ran a call for evidence that opened on 8 July 2024 and closed on 1 September 2024, and it published a summary of the responses on 25 June 2026. The Committee has been working through a draft statement during 2026. As things stand, no safe consumption level has been established in the UK and no final conclusion has been published. Ashwagandha is not banned here and remains legally available, but anyone taking it should know that a review is genuinely in progress.

The Honest Summary

Ashwagandha is a real plant with a long and specific history, a distinctive chemistry, and a modern evidence base that is respectable in one narrow area and thin almost everywhere else. It is not a mystery ingredient and it is not a miracle one. It is a nightshade root that people have used for a very long time, that contains compounds worth studying, and that a serious regulator is currently examining with an open question in front of it.

Knowing what a thing actually is protects you from most of what is said about it. That is the whole reason to start with the plant.
