One Dose. Two Hours. Measurable.

One Dose. Two Hours. Measurable.

Most supplement research asks: what happens after four weeks? After three months? The timeline is always extended, the results always deferred.

This study asked a different question. What does a single dose of Lion's Mane actually do to a working brain, and how quickly does it happen?

The answer arrived in two hours.

The Study

Researchers at the Centre for Applied Health Sciences designed a rigorous study to test the acute cognitive effects of Lion's Mane on healthy adults. The design was randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, and used a crossover method, meaning each participant eventually experienced both the treatment and the placebo, with neither group knowing which they had taken.

Participants took a single dose of Lion's Mane extract and completed three gold-standard neuropsychological assessments at one hour and two hours post-ingestion.

"Participants showed measurable improvements in working memory, complex attention, and reaction time, within two hours of a single dose."

La Monica et al., Nutrients, 2023

The results were consistent across all three tests.

Three Tests. All Improved.

  • N-Back Task (Working Memory). The N-Back is a clinical measure of the brain's ability to hold and manipulate information in real time. Reaction time and accuracy both improved with Lion's Mane versus placebo. This is the cognitive function that governs complex conversation, multi-step reasoning, and sustained focus under pressure.
  • Serial 7s Task (Complex Attention). A standard clinical attention measure in which participants count backwards from 100 in sevens. The Lion's Mane group completed more attempts with greater accuracy than placebo.
  • Go/No-Go Task (Reaction Speed). A test of cognitive inhibition and response control. The Lion's Mane group showed faster reaction times than the placebo group.

These are not soft subjective ratings. They are objective, scored assessments used in clinical neuropsychology. The fact that a single dose produced measurable results across all three is significant.

The Fourth Finding

It was not the finding they led with. But it may be the one that matters most to the people who read this journal carefully.

Participants also reported greater perceptions of happiness at one hour post-ingestion. Not anecdotally. As a measured outcome, in a controlled trial, against a placebo group.

A sharper brain and a better state to be in. Both. From one dose.

Why It Works This Fast

The speed of effect is explained by the hericenone compounds present in Lion's Mane. Unlike many bioactive plant compounds that require accumulation over time, hericenones are able to cross the blood-brain barrier relatively quickly.

Once in the central nervous system, they stimulate the production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF). NGF supports the survival and function of neurons, and plays a key role in the brain's ability to process information efficiently.

The brain responds faster than most people expect.

The Bigger Picture

This was a single study, and the field would benefit from replication at larger scale. The researchers themselves note the findings should be interpreted with appropriate caution given sample size.

That said, the study design was rigorous. The results were statistically significant across multiple independent measures. And the findings are entirely consistent with what the mechanistic evidence on hericenones predicts.

Lion's Mane is not a pharmaceutical. It is a natural compound with a substantive and rapidly expanding evidence base. This study adds something important to that base: evidence of measurable acute effect in healthy adults, on objective cognitive assessments, within hours.

What This Means

  • Working memory. Sharper in real-time cognitive tasks.
  • Reaction speed. Faster responses under cognitive load.
  • Complex attention. Sustained focus and accuracy under pressure.
  • Mood. Measurably improved perceptions of happiness.

For those looking to support their cognitive performance from the ground up, this evidence is meaningful. The timeline is not months. The effect is measurable. And the mechanism is well understood.

Why Formulation Matters

The hericenone content of any given Lion's Mane product varies enormously depending on the part of the mushroom used, how it was extracted, and at what concentration. A weak extract will not replicate the outcomes seen in research.

This is why STRONOS uses a 10:1 Lion's Mane fruiting body extract. Precision formulation. Every batch.
